Purpose of the Committee
1. To promote the ethical, humane and responsible care and use of animals used for scientific purposes as per the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (the Code)
2. To safeguard responsible research with animals, and to establish and maintain cooperative relations with organizations and the Australasian Neuroscience Society, who share common interests.
3. To disseminate in cooperation with other organizations and the Australasian Neuroscience Society, strategies for the support and safeguarding the welfare of animals, that are used in research, teaching and practical applications and to consult on the implementation of these guidelines.
4. To meet the obligations of ANS as a Supporter of the ANZCCART Openness Agreement on Animal Research in Australia

ANZCCART Openness Agreement
In 2023, the Australasian Neuroscience Society became a Founding Supporter of the ANZCCART Openness Agreement on Animal Research in Australia, joining over 30 organisations from academia, industry and funding bodies. Our membership includes educators and researchers who use animals in research and teaching and as a Supporter of the agreement, we will undertake to fulfill the Openness Agreement’s four commitments:
1. We will be open about our involvement in the use of animals in research or teaching
2. We will enhance our communications with the media and the public about our use of animals in research or teaching.
3. We will be proactive in providing opportunities for the public to find out about research or teaching involving animals.
4. We will report annually on our efforts to improve openness in our use of animals in research or teaching.
